1-on-1 sessions · The Surf of Life
Learn to surf
the waves of life.
Struggling in life? Book a 1-on-1 session with an expert in recovering from life-disrupting events. Thirteen years of experience with recovery — for you, at your own pace.
The idea
What if life is not a straight road, but a series of waves?
Life is not a straight line.
There are highs. There are lows. There are moments when you think you have everything under control. And moments when everything changes.
The goal is not to master every wave. The goal is to learn to surf.
1-on-1
Your life has changed. Now what?
Sometimes something happens that splits your life in two:
Before. And after.
Perhaps you have recovered from the event itself, but you still have no idea how to build a life around the person you have become.
That is where 1-on-1 sessions can help.
No therapy.
No quick fix.
No checklist.
Instead: a conversation with someone who understands that life can suddenly look completely different.

1-on-1 sessions
What you can expect from a session
For people who
- have come out of a long relationship and feel an empty space where their life used to be
- have been diagnosed with a chronic illness and whose ‘old life’ is gone for good
- have seen their career come to an end and feel at a loss
- feel they have lost their way in life right now
- are recovering from a disruptive period in their life
- want to talk to someone who has walked a similar path of recovery
What does a session look like?
During a (first) session we will pay attention to your story and where you are right now. It is above all about exchange and equality. Should you need follow-up sessions in which we go deeper into your recovery and its different phases, we will explore that further together. There is no rigid framework.
These sessions are no substitute for professional medical or psychological care.

The story behind the sessions
Until life changed completely.
“Until I was thirty, I lived what I took to be a fairly linear life.”
Before
Work. Relationships. Ambition. Sport. Plans that assumed tomorrow would look like yesterday.
The disruption
Then came a period that tore everything apart: psychiatry, bipolar disorder, benefits, financial guardianship, an institution. Losing control — and with it, the sense of who I was.
The recovery
Slowly learning to live again. Not in leaps — in small, elusive days that eventually led somewhere.
The surf
The realisation that recovery does not mean returning to your old life. It means learning to navigate a new one.

Why me
I don’t have all the answers. I have simply learned to surf the waves of life.
I am Godelieve. I have thirteen years of experience with recovery and I am a certified peer support worker in recovery.
What happened: a period that pulled apart my work, my relationships and my sense of who I was, and placed me in psychiatry, financial guardianship and care.
What recovery meant: not a return, but a slow rebuild — discovering which parts of the old life fitted into the new one, and letting go of the rest.
What I learned: that the hardest part often only begins after the crisis, when everyone assumes you are fine and you have to invent a life from scratch.
Why I do this now: because in that phase I would have given anything for one honest conversation with someone who had been there.
For organisations
Prevention, inspiration and recovery — for managers and employees.
Organisations, too, deal with employees facing life-disrupting events: illness, loss, burnout. The question is not whether it happens, but how you respond to it.
Prevention
Q&A sessions that help prevent people from dropping out: recognising early signs, building resilience and giving words to what employees are going through.
Inspiration
A Q&A that shows recovery is possible — rooted in thirteen years of lived recovery experience, not in theory.
Recovery
Support for employees returning step by step to work and life after a disruptive event.
Questions
No. These sessions are not therapy, diagnosis or medical treatment. They are conversations grounded in lived experience of disruption and recovery, and they are no substitute for professional medical or psychological care.
