The Surf of Life
A person walking alone along a wide coastline

1-on-1 sessions

Struggling in life?

Talk to an expert in recovering from life-disrupting events.

Sometimes something happens that splits your life in two:

Before. And after.

Perhaps you have recovered from the event itself, but you still have no idea how to build a life around the person you have become. That is where these sessions can help.

When life changes completely, you need more than advice. You need someone who understands how it feels.

No therapy.

No quick fix.

No checklist.

Does this sound familiar?

An empty space where your life used to be.

Your relationship has ended

Has your long-term relationship just come to an end, leaving an empty space where your life used to be?

A chronic illness

Have you been diagnosed with a chronic illness, and is your ‘old life’ gone for good?

Your career came to an end

Has your career come to an end, leaving you feeling at a loss?

Lost your way

Or do you simply feel you have lost your way in life right now?

Godelieve has thirteen years of experience with recovery and would love to support you.

Recovery is something we do together

Recovery is not a straight line. It moves in waves.

The cycle of recovery: surfing, wipe-out, in-between phase and rebuilding — again and again

01

Surfing

Everything flows. You are riding the wave and life goes smoothly — until it doesn’t.

02

Wipe-out

The disruption. You are pulled under and for a while you don’t know which way is up.

03

In-between

The old life is gone, the new one not yet formed. Uncomfortable — and exactly where recovery begins.

04

Rebuilding

Step by step you build a life around the person you have become.

“Recovery is something we do together.” — You don’t have to recover alone. That is what I am here for.

Why a peer support worker

Get support without waiting for months.

Your GP and practice nurse don’t always have the time or knowledge to support you. Waiting lists in mental healthcare are long, and not everyone qualifies for a referral. You need support now — not in eight months.

Lived experience

I have ended up in a life-disrupting situation several times myself and have come through it every time. I bring this lived experience into our session.

Trained peer support worker

A year and a half of training with an eight-month internship at Howie the Harp, followed by years of active work at a Recovery Academy. I have heard hundreds of recovery stories — no situation is too strange for me.

A bridge between two worlds

Ten years in international business and then years in healthcare. That is why I speak the language of different worlds.

I stand alongside existing care, not against it.

What does a session look like?

During a (first) session we pay attention to your story and where you are right now. It is above all about exchange and equality. If you need follow-up sessions in which we go deeper into your recovery and its different phases, we will explore that further together. There is no rigid framework.

Trained as a peer support worker at Howie the Harp, with an eight-month internship.

Thirteen years of experience with recovery — first my own, then that of others.

How it works

01

A first conversation

Free, 30 minutes, no preparation. You talk, I listen. We see whether there is a match.

02

A session

1 hour + 15 minutes, online or in person. We look at where you are now — not where you should have been.

03

What comes next

Some people come once. Others come back every few weeks while their new life takes shape. There is no programme you have to finish.

These sessions are no substitute for professional medical or psychological care. If you are in an immediate crisis, please contact your GP or the emergency services.

For organisations

Prevention, inspiration and recovery — for managers and employees.

Organisations, too, deal with life-disrupting events: illness, loss, burnout. The question is not whether it happens, but how you respond to it.

Prevention

Q&A sessions that help prevent people from dropping out: recognising early signs, building resilience and giving words to what employees are going through.

Inspiration

A Q&A that shows recovery is possible — rooted in thirteen years of lived recovery experience, not in theory.

Recovery

Support for employees returning step by step to work and life after a disruptive event — illness, loss, burnout.

Price and duration

Clear, with no small print.

Questions

No. I am not a psychiatrist or psychologist: I do not prescribe medication and I do not provide specific therapies such as schema therapy, cognitive behavioural therapy or EMDR. What I offer is support based on my own experience and training as a peer support worker. If I notice you need more, I will suggest discussing it with your GP.
